QUESTION: Dr. Uss, I'm taking 5,000 units of Vitamin-D3 daily, is this enough to reduce my risks of cancer?
ANSWER: Dr. Uss Reply - The better question to ask is; what should my 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels be in order reduce my risk of cancer?
This is determined with a blood test. Optimal blood levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D are between 54 and 90ng/ml. It is important to note that taking high doses of vitamin D has been shown to reduce elasticity in arteries in some studies. This may be due to the fact that vitamin D raises blood levels of calcium.
Without the proper guidance, calcium may end up in the wrong places in your body like the arteries or kidneys.
This may be remedied by taking another fat soluble vitamin, vitamin K. Vitamin K turns on proteins that direct the elevated calcium to bones and teeth were it belongs.
In a study on postmenopausal women given a vitamin D supplement with minerals, these subjects showed a worsening of the elasticity of the arteries. In the other group given vitamin D with K and minerals, artery elasticity remained stable.

QUESTION: Dear Dr. Brian,
I used to drink the 24/7 meal replacement product by Patty McPeak, it used to be called Rice N’Shine, I loved it but my supply ran out.
I now see on this website that it has changed it’s name to 24/7 and a new ingredient has been added called “Beer Extract powder”- my question is that:
Is there any alcohol in the beer extract powder- because as a Muslim I cannot drink any alcohol, as it mentions “Beer” which I know to be a popular alcoholic drink. Or is it like apple cider vinegar- which has the name “Cider” but has no alcohol?
regards,
Irfan Q.
ANSWER: Dr. Uss Reply -Irfan,The manufactures have assured us that there is in fact no alcohol in the Patty McPeak 24/7 meal replacement.
Be well,
Dr Brian
