Nutrina's Algae Complex contains the following principal algae — Spirulina, Chlorella, Dulse, Kelp, and D. Salina.
Spirulina and Chlorella: Spirulina and Chlorella are two of the most important algae species. Both are rich sources of essential amino acids and protein. Unlike other high protein foods such as meat, spirulina and chlorella are low in fat and high in fiber. This makes them ideal supplements during weight-loss programs, for example.
Spirulina and chlorella are also excellent sources of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll, the substance responsible for the green color in plants, contains anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. It is interesting to note that chlorophyll has an almost identical molecular structure to that of red blood cells, which enables it to enrich the blood and to treat anemia. Chlorophyll also effectively absorbs and inactivates some toxic materials, which cleanses the bloodstream.
Spirulina also contains phytochemicals that act as disease-fighting compounds. Because these compounds protect plants against free radical induced cellular damage, they are currently under study for their role in disease prevention. Spirulina is known to contain the highest concentration of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) found in a plant source—GLA is an essential fatty acid that aids the body's production of prostaglandins, substances that help alleviate arthritis and heart disease by controlling body functions.
Algae also contain among the highest levels of B12 found in any food. An essential blood-building vitamin, B12 is important in improving the health of people with anemia.
Dulse: Nutrina's Algae complex also contains dulse, kelp, and D. salina. Dulse, Palmaria palmata, is a red seaweed that grows in the North Atlantic and Northwest Pacific. It is an excellent source dietary requirements such as vitamin B6, B12, iron, potassium, calcium, and fluoride (good for strong teeth).
Kelp: Laminaria digitada, is a sea vegetable found throughout the world in shallow open coastal waters. Kelp is the original source of iodine, an important chemical element which assists in the production of the thyroid hormones that maintain normal metabolism in all cells. Kelp is also a good source of vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D, and E.
D. Salina: Dunaliella salina algae, or D. salina, is a unique species of algae harvested from five lakes near Whyalla, Australia. D. salina contains antioxidants which work to protect the body from harmful oxygen radicals. It also contains high levels of carotenoids, plant pigments shown to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
Since algae is a natural food containing abundant sources of vital nutrients, it has in recent years become an increasingly important nutraceuticals product for overall body health.
As nutrients high in protein that also contain all essential amino acids, algae products are considered rejuvenators of the body. There is evidence that these chlorophyll-rich foods also help cleanse the bloodstream and detoxify the body by absorbing and inactivating toxic materials.
Additionally, Chlorophyll is an antioxidant which may also help decrease cellular damage caused by environmental carcinogens.
